Romanian designs
National design protection in Romania is granted by OSIM under Law no. 129/1992, harmonised with EU design law.
What this covers
Assessment of novelty and individual character; preparation of the representations; filing and prosecution; and renewal. We act on direct national filings and on the Romanian designation of an international (Hague) registration.
The procedure
OSIM examines the application and issues a registration certificate for a design that meets the requirements. Protection runs for an initial ten years from filing and is renewable for three further five-year periods, up to a maximum of 25 years. Paris priority may be claimed within six months of a first filing abroad.

Common questions
- How long does a Romanian registered design last?
- An initial ten years from filing, renewable for three further five-year periods, to a maximum of 25 years (10 + 5 + 5 + 5). This differs from the EU/REUD term, which runs in five-year periods to the same 25-year maximum.
- What makes a design registrable?
- It must be new and have individual character. OSIM examines the application and issues a registration certificate where those requirements are met.
