International designs (Hague)
The Hague System lets a holder obtain design protection in many territories through one international registration. Romania and the EU can be designated; we act as local counsel on those designations.
What this covers
Advice on designating Romania and/or the EU; monitoring through OSIM or EUIPO; and responding to any provisional refusal against the designation (see Provisional refusals).
The procedure
Each designated office examines under its own law and grants or provisionally refuses within the applicable period; a refusal is answered directly with that office, and contesting it requires a local representative.
Common questions
- Does a Hague designation need a local representative?
- Only to contest a provisional refusal before OSIM or the EUIPO. Until a refusal issues, the designation proceeds without local representation.
- How is a design designation examined?
- Each designated office examines under its own law and either grants protection or issues a provisional refusal within the applicable period; any response is filed directly with that office, not with WIPO.
