EU designs (REUD)
A Registered EU Design (REUD) is a unitary right covering the whole Union, administered by the EUIPO. It replaced the “Registered Community Design” in the 2025 reform.
What this covers
Filing strategy across the EU; preparation of representations; central filing at the EUIPO, including multi-design applications (up to 50 designs, across Locarno classes); and renewal. We also advise on the unregistered EU design right, which arises automatically and gives shorter, unregistered protection.
The procedure
The EUIPO checks formalities and registers; substantive novelty is tested mainly if the design is later challenged. A REUD runs in five-year terms up to a 25-year maximum. From 1 July 2026, the reform extends protection to certain digital and animated designs and graphical user interfaces.
How we are instructed
We act as your EUIPO representative for filing and renewal, and advise on how the unitary right interacts with national Romanian protection and with Hague designations.
Common questions
- How long does a Registered EU Design last?
- It runs in five-year terms up to a maximum of 25 years. (A Romanian national design runs for an initial ten years, then three five-year renewals, to the same 25-year maximum.)
- Is a REUD examined for novelty before registration?
- No — the EUIPO checks formalities and registers; substantive novelty and individual character are assessed mainly if the design is later challenged, so a pre-filing assessment is worthwhile.
